National Do Not Cross State Lines Day

It's a Good Day to Stay Home

National Do Not Cross State Lines Day has nothing to do with illegal activities - the kind that get you in even more trouble once you cross a state line.

The intent of this day is to encourage you to appreciate the state in which you reside.

Think how often, when planning a vacation, you pick a place far away from home that you haven't been to yet. Pretty often, right?

How often do people in other states come to visit your home state? Pretty often (for most of us), right?

Doesn't it make sense then to use some of your vacations to see what others are spending their vacation dollars on in your own state?

State tourism departments commonly look to attract outsiders into their area, but I don't think they'd object to native Wisconsinites spending money in Wisconsin, native Californians spending money in California, or native South Carolinians spending money in South Carolina.

When you see a commercial on TV promoting the benefits of visiting your state, pay attention to it next time. You might discover something worth seeking out that you hadn't thought of before.

Instead of going to [insert state other than your own here]tourism.com, check out [insert home state here]tourism.com. I bet you'll find more than one thing worth making a trip to.

Now, if you absolutely have to cross a state line today, hopefully it's because you're currently out of your home state and are headed back home. If you're going the other direction, see if you can postpone that trip by a day (or longer).

If you simply must cross a state line on January 10 this year, keep it in mind for next year and plan on staying put.
