Like Mother, Like Son?
You know "Whistler's Mother", don't you? It's the painting actually entitled Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 by James Whistler.
Not only is the real title less commonly used than the nickname, it's also not entirely accurate. There are more colors than grey and black in it. But yes, generally it's those shades of grey - probably more than 50.
Today, January 21, is the day to celebrate, not the mother but the son. It's Whistler's Son Day.
I don't know if James Whistler ever had a son, but if he did, you could apply this day to him. This day is intended to commemorate James Whistler as the son of his mother Anna.
James painted a portrait of himself as well. It's technically called Arrangement in Gray: Portrait of the Painter.
The most obvious way to celebrate this special day is by painting a portrait, either your own or someone else's. Note that making it a good portrait is not a requirement.
The type of paints you use is not specified either. Water colors, oils, acrylics - anything will do.
When you're done, take a picture and share it with Da Unyun.
And that brings me to an apology.
Comments Are Now Open
I didn't realize until yesterday that you couldn't comment on posts here at Da Unyun. Somehow they had been turned off (hidden). I have now turned them on for this post and all others in the future. Apparently this doesn't affect previously posted items.
So, sorry about that, chief.
