Even if they did exist, they probably didn't look like the pretty ponies that people with wild imaginations draw and design today. They were more likely some rude, crude creatures that, if they did exist, people killed off because they couldn't stand to look at them.
What does this do to the metaphorical and philosophical unicorn? Oh, please! Give it up already. There are much better metaphors and philosophies out there. Wake up, smell the coffee, and go find one.
