National 2nd Month of the Year Month

The 2nd Month Wasn't Always the One You Think

Today we celebrate the first special day that isn't actually a day. This is the start of National 2nd Month of the Year Month.

From time to time, we'll celebrate either a whole month or a whole week instead of just a single day.

The 2nd month of the year nowadays is February. Many moons ago, the 2nd month of the year was April.

Many moons before the 2nd month was April, we don't know what the 2nd month was - or what any of the months were, for that matter.

It gets really complicated to try to figure out the modern day equivalent of a month (or day) back in pre-Roman era times. This chart gives you a taste of some of the difficulties.

But enough about the distant past. February this year, 2016, has enough problems of its own because this is a leap year. February has the infamous 29th day giving us a year with 366 days.

This makes the 2nd month of the year, especially this year, a great month to do something extra - something you wouldn't normally have time to do.

Let us know what you plan to do this month over and above what you usually do.

By the way, I have a theory (no proof whatsoever) that before the Flood, every month was 28 days long (corresponding to a lunar cycle of the same length) and every year had 13 months for a total of 364 days. Nice and neat.
