Ask Your Doctor about a Drug Advertised on TV Day

But Don't Expect a Pleasant Answer

On Ask Your Doctor about a Drug Advertised on TV Day, you get to do just what those sponsors want you to do. Why they expect it will get you anywhere is beyond me.

Okay, so this is a bit of a rant.

If you watch any of the "old people" channels like I do, you're seemingly constantly bombarded with drug ads for possible cures that the creators of the ads apparently think your doctor has never heard of. And if he or she has heard of them, they're not letting you in on the good news - though in most cases the long list of side effects seem worse than the problem.

Doctors hate these commercials. I've heard that some of them are even banding together to try to get these ads off the air. Yay!

If your doctor hasn't recommended what's being advertised to you, there's probably a good reason for it - like it won't work for you, or it doesn't correspond to your symptoms, or there's something a lot cheaper that does the same thing and you're already taking it.

Speaking of money, think of how much it must be costing these companies to advertise these drugs. (Granted, the ad time on some of the shows they pick probably isn't commanding top dollar.)

No wonder medications in general cost so much! If companies are eventually forced to stop advertising like this, maybe, just maybe, they'll lower their costs to consumers if only a little.

Nah.

Have fun celebrating March 3. Let us know if your doctor is one of those working against these ads.
