World Feed a Wild Bird Day

To Feed or Not To Feed

Some of you, like me, may already be celebrating World Feed a Wild Bird Day. I have two bird feeders out in the back yard - a tall cylinder type and an open box - both hanging from a double shepherd's crook.

The purpose of feeding wild birds is so they don't die before their time. You can't keep the predators away, other than keeping your cat indoors. You can keep them supplied with food. That way, they can spend more time doing whatever else it is that birds do.

They make nests. They breed and lay eggs. They raise their young by protecting them from your cat(s) and feeding them. They show their young how to fly and whatever else they're willing to learn.

With all that to occupy their time, if you didn't provide food and sustenance, they would probably die of starvation. So, even if you don't get a physical bird feeder, you should, at least, get a bag of bird seed and toss some of it out it the yard for them to find.

Sure, the chippy rats (aka chipmunks) and squirrels will get some of it, but the birds will get most, especially if you keep chasing the rodents away.

So celebrate this special day anywhere around the world by saving a bird with food.
