Giant Peach Day

A Peachy Keen Day

You may first have thought of James and the Giant Peach when you saw the name of today's specialty. And you would be justified in assuming that this day had something to do with that Roald Dahl book.

But you would be wrong.

The origin of Giant Peach Day comes not from that book (or the movie, or the Mario franchise) but from an oversized peach crayon that was once designed by Crayola as part of a huge 64-pack of crayons to celebrated the company's 100th anniversary in 1985.

The giant peach crayon and its fellow colors remain on display today at company headquarters in Forks Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania.

Did you know that Crayola has been owned by Hallmark since 1984? I'm not sure why the one thought buying the other was a good idea (other than being profitable). There doesn't seem to be all that much correlation between the two.

To celebrate Giant Peach Day, eat a piece of a peach or a crayon, whichever floats your boat highest in the water.
